I've had great luck with extreme cashmere and lisa yang (both in the $400-1000 range). Extreme has a yummy, thick texture that is pretty distinct. Lisa yang is generally a bit airier, but still feels (and is!) quite stable.

I'm obsessed with extreme cashmere, though it is definitely a splurge. Toteme is another favorite. Nadaam, loulou studio, and allude are decent mid-price brands. I haven't had much luck with lower-priced stuff, but I think banana republic is probably the best of the go-to mall brands. I avoid JCrew and madewell at all costs. Edit: Lisa Yang is another good one.

Lisa Yang has become my favorite in the arena of luxe knits. Yes, expensive, but still half the price of The Row, and in my humble opinion, just as standout in terms of beauty and quality.

You used to be able to put Rag & Bone and All Saints in this category but everything has gotten much more expensive. I think you can still sometimes find them on sale under that price. Lisa Yang on sale depending on by how much occasionally too.
